First of all, forget all the raving you've heard about the voice acting and story. The story has been a checklist of anime and jRPG tropes (Open playing as overpowered character who becomes crippled to maintain balance, start playing as idealistic protagonist in idealistic village, introduced to bland domesticated love interest whose greatest goal in life is for her man to like her cooking). Everyone gushes how British voice actors avoid the usual voice embarrassment, but they're still stuck with awful stilted translations and the end result is a slight step above Dynasty Warriors' voice acting.
A lot has been said how the graphics look as good as any Xbox/PS3 game. This is astoundingly untrue. This almost could have been a PS2 game.
The actual gameplay is pretty much FF8 if the whole thing worked. If that's all you want from an RPG, then I guess this works. Just none of it has been terribly compelling so far. |
