Have you heard about Sudan vs. South Sudan? by Tansin A. Darcos (TDARCOS) 04/24/2012, 10:52am PDT
If you're unaware that there is a war between the country of Sudan and the new country broken off from it, South Sudan, you can be excused because the American media is not covering it; I saw no direct reference to it on CNN's website.

I listen to the internet radio feed of the BBC World Service and I hear news reports about things the media here don't think are worth covering.

Sudan has been in the news for years because of the genocide taking place in Darfur. The citizens of the southern half of the country got the right to break off and form a new country (of South Sudan) in an earlier referendum, but the government of Sudan in Khartoum doesn't like this and is fighting them. Nothing new here, Sudan's ruler Bashir was indicted by the International Court of Justice for war crimes in supporting the Janjaweed militias that went around engaging in such fun practices as conscripting children as soldiers and raping civilian women.

Well, what's interesting is that China, of all countries, is trying to mediate this war and get both sides to cooperate in peace. This is pragmatic on Beijing's part; China got almost all of the oil produced by the country when Sudan was one country. Now that it's two, South Sudan got about 3/4 of the oil fields and the resources that the single country produced. So as a result, China happens to be one of the few countries that is "friends" with both countries and can exert some influence on both of them. In view of them being a new country, South Sudan is trying to get a new pipeline built so that it can ship the oil out of its country without it having to go through Sudan.

But I'll bet none of this shows up on the evening news of any of the U.S. television networks.
