While today is April 15, it's not the due date to file this year because when the 15th falls on a Saturday or Sunday the due date is moved to the next business day. Now, normally that would be Monday, the 16th, only because President Lincoln freed all the slaves in the District of Columbia on April 16, 1862, that day was made a holiday for that city. Since this means April 16th is a federal holiday, (even though only in the District) it still means the due date is again moved forward (for the whole country) one day.
So now you know why tax day is April 17 this year.
