I read the first book as a teenager and actually really enjoyed it, it had a nice spare Love Triangle In Space simplicity to it that I dug.
But I also tried re-reading his Thomas Covenant series a few years ago and thought it was super fucking dreadful so I don't know.

It's a little too far in the future to qualify as "cyberpunk" but it's some of the darkest grittiest pulpiest sci fi I've ever read. Seems to be cheap on amazon if you shop around.
The main problem with this series is that the first book is really weak. The author's note spells out that it was just a narrative experiment. But from book 2 onwards, like some bizarro-world version of William Gibson, he picks up book 1's loose threads and goes crazy places with the universe and characters.
It ain't high art, but that's not what you wanted, right? |
