the most useful gameplay video stuff is giant bomb's by jeep 03/28/2012, 8:07pm PDT
I was going to reply to a post in diablo 3 but I'm putting this here because I think it's a good thing, and maybe after 15 years of trashing games journalism on the internet I can take one post to point out a good thing.

no disrespect to the cable's videos, which have a lot of insight, but this is...new? let's call it new. this is literally the first "new" video game journalism thing I have ever seen benefit the player.

giant bomb do the first half hour-ish of a game in real time, they just turn the game on and start playing without editing it. if you just ignore their babbling you get probably the single best idea whether the game is for you or not just by looking at the video, because you are seeing what you would see if you played it, and games are so visual that it's enough to tell you probably 95% of what you'd need to know about whether it's worth your money. they're not cherrypicking anything, just running through it. you can see that serious sam 3 isn't good, and you can see saint's row 3 is fucking awesome. you can tell if the game is heavy on cutscenes, if the humor is your type, if the gameplay interests you, if the graphics look good. what the fuck else could I ask for?

it's time consuming to watch a lot of them, but I think if you take the time to get through like half of this one, you'll see that specific method is probably the best way any critic can communicate to a potential customer whether a game is 'for them' or not. this video below was up on youtube a week before the game came out, I don't know that it's something they're supposed to do or what, but it really is the first time I felt like I got a clear signal about a game I might buy (I did buy it, based on that video), and I think that's great.

I got the same benefit as a consumer from their look at binary domain: you could tell me "it's like gears of war was all robots," but without that video I can't really tell from a written review whether the game is a pretty smooth and fluid cover shooter knockoff (like binary domain) or if it's just got some bullshit cover combat like mass effect. there's a bit where even the babbling has some value: you can hear him struggle with the voice commands to squadmates shit, which didn't really sound like fun even if it works. I got the best idea of whether I'd like the game or not, and I didn't buy it.

if I'd thought of looking for that kind of review for mass effect 3 I'd have known: the dialogue trees are truncated, the character animation is not done as well, the combat is the same as 2. this kind of video coming out before I decide whether to buy a game or not is literally the highest value consumer reporting of any games journalism ever, made even better by not really relying on the relative competence of the journalist (so even tom chick can do it). they should drop their other priorities and focus on having these for every single game, "edgy" humor and all.
