The big thing Kurosawa was experimenting with in The Hidden Fortress, aka. "Star Wars," was to tell an epic story with heroic characters from the point of view of the lowliest characters in the story: two bandits who become unwilling participants after they end up in possession of the Death Star plans the Princess' hidden cache of gold.
George Lucas later turned those bandits into droids.
It's a movie worth seeing if you think George Lucas ever had some storytelling genius that he "lost." |
