I'm disappointed with Duke Nukem Forever. I just bought a computer specifically to play this game. It is an Acer Aspire X1420G, has a 64-bit quad core 3.1 GHZ processor (DNF says it "only" needs a dual core machine), with 4 GB of memory and a shitload of disk space. The video on the machine is NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nforce 430, so it's not a limited graphics card. But the program has severe response problems and apparently runs slow; I noticed by the way it loads that the audio was not playing the sound correctly, it kept breaking up.
Switching to windowed mode or reduced size doesn't help here. The program is still slow. I've already tweaked the machine to change swap space to 6GB and make it fixed so there's no virtual memory resizing issues (this was basically the first thing I did after I initially started the machine).
I'm guessing the problem is the video card, DNF recommends a minimum GeForce 7600 or prefers a GeForce 8800 GTS, and since my number is 6150 it's probably a lesser card. But the thing is, this ain't exactly a weak card, but it just bugs me that a game expects the absolute bleeding edge of technology. I mean, I think this game is available for XBox 360, and I suspect its video card is not all that advanced.
I am not that upset; I just used DNF as an excuse to buy a multi-core 64 bit processor which I've been wanting to do for a long time. I'm just really concerned that this program has severe performance problems on a fairly recent machine. |
