I recently re-watched this movie after the Plinkett Crystal Skull review and there's a detail I never really noticed about this film before: how spooky God is in this movie. I realized that whenever they weren't doing the adventure serial parts, this was a fucking Lovecraft story. The talk about how the Ark is not of this world, the old city of Tanis being wiped out and swallowed by the desert within days of the Ark arriving, the ominous wind that blows through scenes every time characters come a step closer to finding it, especially the swirling stormclouds framing Indy's mad obsessed eyes when they finally uncover the tomb.
This is not a Kumbaya around the campfire god, this is something far more dangerous and otherworldly than Lucas' transdimensional greys. Indiana Jones doesn't save the day in the end, his triumph is simply surviving being in the presence of Yaweh. It's awesomel
Though Spielberg does sort of ruin the effect by having God burn through the ropes typing Indiana and Marion to the pole. |
