I agree with the people who said it was "alright" and "better than Braid" by Jerry Whorebach 01/02/2012, 3:31pm PST
I'm playing it right now. The combat is satisfying; the weapons are differentiated well and the relatively small number of enemy types all have unique attack patterns. I feel like it could be fun to master if they'd bothered to include any fights challenging enough to necessitate it. (The highest difficulty level is named Normal, maybe they were planning to add a Hard mode and just ran out of time?) The fantasy 19th-century setting is imaginative, and I wouldn't mind exploring it in a more traditional adventure or role-playing type game. Basically, all the pieces are here to make a really compelling game out of, but instead all we got was a really polished one.

Every level is just one long, winding hallway full of vases to break and enemies to steamroll. There is no exploration; occasionally you'll encounter a branching path, but one side will always very quickly terminate in a dead end with a piece of treasure. There are no NPCs to speak of, save the narrator, and no puzzles to solve - I don't think you even have to find any keycards. I can't comment on the story because I haven't finished it yet, but I'm expecting a pretty mindblowing twist at the very last moment because the twist they've given me so far (what if... humans were the REAL monsters?) is so cliched and embarassing that it pretty much has to be a red herring.

I'm trying hard not to compare this game to "real" ones like Diablo or Symphony of the Night, because compared to most "art" games it's actually pretty playable. The problem is it's just good enough to have me fantasizing about how much better it could've been if the PAINFULLY INDIE developers would've had the resources (and possibly ambition?) to attempt something with the scope of a glorious failure like Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. And those are dangerous thoughts to be having while you're deep into hour five of what's essentially a lawnmowing simulator.
