A lot of pretty clever gags that made me chuckle, especially the ones about irrelevancy at the muppets' own expense (Kermit has an old robot butler serving Tab and New Coke). It definitely isn't like the rest of the post-Henson stink.
Could have used a touch less low hanging 4th wall jokes, and Segel/Adams could have been cut out of the movie entirely to a net positive effect. In fact, it would have been twice as good if they dropped them then expanded on the gag of an executive's attempt at Poochie-fying the muppets.
Am I the only one who's starting to think that every fucking movie writer is trying to shoehorn in Robert McKee character conflict arcs into everything these days? Why does there need to be a conflict about forgetting anniversaries in a freaking Muppet movie? Neil Patrick Harris has to have an unwanted pregnancy crises in The Smurfs, while every single red shirt in Battle for Los Angeles needs to have personal demons to resolve. |
