I've just finished building a new computer for someone, and I figured I'd throw in a few 1TB HDDs because they're basically free. However I ended up re-using the old HDDs from the previous machine, because it seems HDD prices skyrocketed (more than doubled) around mid-october.
Why, man? Someone pointed out the increase is due to a disaster in Thailand, but I understand your point. I bought a new 2 TB internal SATA hard drive for $89, several months ago. Probably as much as six months ago, I'm not sure. (I went back and looked on-line for comments about it and have discovered it was around January.) Probably either Sleazegate or Wornout Digital. I hadn't thought about it because even with all the loading of basically everyything I have from the other computer I'm still only using 350 gig. Jeez, "only 350 gig"! I can remember less than 20 years ago buying my first hard drive, 80 meg, and taking it home on the bus, scared to death I'd drop it, and it cost, then $420.
It looks like I lucked out on this purchase and got it at a fairly good price compared to now.
They're taking the opportunity to collude and price fix. Save your receipts, as we will all get refunds in 6-7 years of like fifteen or twenty whole dollars.
I hope nobody else here has this misfortune.

Anyone notice a drastic HDD price hike lately? by Eurotrash 11/09/2011, 1:59pm PST
