Sympathy is fine by Yuk Yuk analyst firm 10/05/2011, 2:56pm PDT
The problem is that it's Jim and Pam who are set up to be the sympathetic characters you identify with.

What is there to be sympathetic about? Both harbor the (conscious and unconscious) notion that they're better than everyone around them and haven't succeeded because of every possible reason other than their attitude and ability. That shouldn't invoke sympathy, that's called being a dick.

The most sympathetic character is Michael. He's a child in a position of responsibility and while he's an idiot he honestly believes he's being everyone's friend and just wants to be liked. He's tragically oblivious with warped good intentions which is a lot more than you can say of Jim and Pam.

Hence going back to the cause of what went wrong with the show: Michael should be the focus but shlubby viewers sided with the uninteresting soap opera of Jim and Pam being perfect. In that regard it resembles the For Better or For Worse comic strip where you're supposed to accept the characters as perfect but are actually horrible people written by and for broken people.
