But in most cases, it seems like most games being released just repeat the "same old, same old" that every other game does. Perhaps it has to do with the cost to develop a game, but you would think there is room to try and do something new every so often. But it doesn't really happen all that often.

The problem with new game concepts is that it usually takes a certain amount of iteration for them to bear fruit. How many painfully terrible one-on-one fighters did we suffer through before Street Fighter II changed everything? How many laughable first-person combat simulators did we try and convince ourselves were anything like virtual reality until Wolfenstein 3D came along, let alone Doom? Practically every genre of games popular today dates back to the home computer boom of the 1980s at the latest, it just took some of them longer than others to reach maturity. It's rare that an entirely new concept springs fully formed onto devices that haven't changed substantially in the last fifteen years (Katamari is really all I can think of off the top of my head, though I'm sure there are other exceptions which prove the rule). If all you're interested in are vaguely innovative mechanics, however, there are plenty of those popping up every day in the touch screen and motion control spaces; the only problem is the games they appear in are about as fleshed out as the average RTS on the Commodore 64. Give it time, though, and I'm sure you'll start seeing some of the more promising examples trickle down into higher-budget titles, even if it takes a new generation of hardware to facilitate it.
