It might be? I never played that. by fabio 09/17/2011, 3:50pm PDT
I just know I was never having fun at any point.

In addition to the grinding, the combat is simplistic (barely above fighting hostile lifeforms with the SC2 lander) and frustrating. The whole shields/armor mechanic where half the weapons are useless against one is bad enough, but this splits it up into shields/armor/hull with weapons strong against only one type. On top of all that everything but beam weapons (anti-shield) are useless against small fast ships since nothing else can hit them.

This wouldn't be that big a problem if it wasn't for the spawning system. New enemy ship waves can warp in right on top of you, and you'll never know if it's one requiring beams/missiles or cannons/torpedoes. You can "refit" your existing ships but you lose control of them (they'll probably die) before they warp back at the starting point. So you run into situations several times per mission where enemies you cannot deal with warp right on top of you and you might as well self destruct your whole fleet and build new ones because they're going to die anyway. Swapping out loadouts on the build screen every time this happens is a massive pain.

Then there's just little stupid stuff with the friendly ship AI. You get torn to shreds by respawning minefields because there doesn't seem to be any way to order your AI ships to attack mine generators, and I have yet to kill one with my single ship before I die. Enemy ships with mine layers? Fuck it abort mission.

There's the upgrade system where you spend points on certain areas to get generic percentage bonuses, but at different levels it allows you to equip special systems. It never tells you what those new systems do though until you buy it at a station so you can't plan ahead.

Maybe it gets fun after 7 hours? Who knows.
