From Dust's DRM sucks but I also have to log into Minecraft and I didn't scream and cry about that either. The always-on-internet-required DRM is evil because "I bought this shitty game why can't I play it wherever I take my laptop" and yeah there oughta be a law but I don't use laptops for gaming so I never run into this problem. The only reason more games we buy on Steam don't have it is because Steam/Steamworks itself takes care of all the drm functions: verifying a registered install, play time tracking, recording elements of gameplay, recording hardware/software loadouts. I noticed every time I exit Oblivion, Steam uploads a huge blob of data to its servers but no one complains about that because capital is perennially revolutionary and the privacy people have already lost and just don't know it yet. So the real complaint with From Dust is "why didn't you retards use the DRM tools provided you?"...and it may come as a shock to everyone here but I have an answer for that, too: I worked with Numsey at a video game company a few years ago and I saw the reason for DRM firsthand: corporations insure their new projects and business ventures against all kinds of things, and they fight to keep costs of insurance down, so when the insurance retard comes by and says "we will lower your premiums by 2.5% if you show evidence that you are actively fighting piracy" well you get things like WildTangent (that dude also worked there, yes he was a dick). |
