I haven't watched any L&O since the episode they trashed the Innocence Project by Mischief Maker 09/04/2011, 11:01am PDT
Granted it was a latter-season episode after McCoy became the DA and they shrugged off any semblance of moral ambiguity. I immediately knew the IP was going to be evil once the IP lawyer acted all snotty to the ADA when they first met. Oh shit, was that episode a character assassination against the Innocence Project. The students were giving drug money to a junkie to act as a witness, the IP lawyer was using shit from the ADA's law school past against him. The "jump out of my chair to scream bullshit" part was near the end where the ADA gives the IP lawyer a steely glare and asks, "Do you really think he's innocent?" and she responds with embarrassed silence. That's the biggest question the Innocence Project asks before even taking on a case.

Stop me if I've mentioned this here before, but the most fascinating aspect of TV court shows for me is when a lawyer intentionally mentions something expressly forbidden in front of the jury, there's an objection, the lawyer smirks at the witness for several beats, then dismissively says, "withdrawn." If the bad guy lawyer does that, the intended response is, "ooh! That evil snaky lawyer, he's breaking the rules because he can't win the case on its own merits and now he's resorting to underhanded tactics!" BUT if the good guy lawyer does the exact same thing the response is, "Ha ha! Way to go, good guy lawyer! The rules won't allow him to win the case on its own merits, so now he's thinking outside the box for justice!" Even if both do it in the same episode!

That's what was so great about "My Cousin Vinny," every time he fucked around he was held in contempt of court.
