I thought it was more an appeal to cultural cowards (hipsters, spinsters) who like to safely mock mainstream culture with 20/20 hindsight and 50 years separation.
I like how The Tudors is a show set in a time where people drank powdered gold and pearls as a remedy to plague, yet it isn't a fraction as heavy handed when it comes to anachronisms as Mad Men, a show set in a time that the largest age demograph in the U.S. still remembers.
Tudors seasons 3 & 4 reviews:
I totally gave up trying to keep track of the new characters. Who is the pirate cowboy and where did he come from? Is he the musician who lost an eye to torture the previous season? Did he go from gay minstrel to medieval James Bond?
The writers are completely bi polar in who they decide to frame as good guys. Cromwell never did anything worse than shut down carney shows and confiscate chickens, yet he's Satan incarnate they don't allow any Protestants to deliver a single line without scowling. Meanwhile Catholics are all angelic beings of light despite being total cunts and burning people at the stake. This is all completely reversed in season 4 for no reason.
There's actually some siege warfare scenes in the last season, which I guess sucked up the budget of other departments, with makeup being the worse hit. They don't even try to make Meyers look older, just a stripe in the goatee and voice lessons from Christian Bale. Henry is supposed to be 54 and 300 pounds at this point.

It's so weird that defending a boring show is what brought you back NT by fabio 08/26/2011, 7:01am PDT
