| Could have been so much better.
They got some really great interviews rife for hilarity (Creationist Museum with the Animatronic dinosaurs with saddles, for example) but instead of giving these people enough rope to hang themselves, Bill Maher can't let them go more than 30 seconds before inserting himself with, "aww c'mon! That's crazy talk!" then completely taking over the conversation and preaching his own beliefs into the camera. Then they cut to him in a car giving more of his views about that non-interview he just finished. The most infuriating part is when he says he thinks all these religious leaders say that they're tolerant and nonviolent just as good PR for outsiders. Then quit presenting yourself as an outsider! A couple gently leading questions and a generous portion of "Yes, and..." would have made this movie a hundred times better. He may have tapped Sacha Cohen's director, but Bill Maher is no Sacha Cohen. |
