All the recent maps are in the same theme of American Midwest circa 1950's. Some of the community-made weapons don't really jive well with it, but who the fuck cares? It's like bitching about Half Life mods.

No, the games' balance USED to suck and took on a very disturbing melee-centric tilt with the Chargin' Targe and Claymore and etc. You could go Pyro and clean house. Also Heavies disappeared from the class rotation.
Since Australian Christmas it's gotten better, especially with the emphasis on weapons that play towards class strengths while exacerbating weaknesses (Brass Beast, The Enforcer, Bazaar's Bargain). I've seen more Heavies in the past few weeks than I ever saw after the Spy update.

TF2 isn't the same game anymore, it's F2P now, so all this stuff now makes sense. But back when I had paid for the product, it felt like Valve was dangling content in front of me like it was carrot on a string.

Holy fucking shit. Did you know that there are now as man servers running Team Fortress 2 than Counterstrike and Counterstrike: Source combined?! COUNTERSTRIKE! I remember when I used to be happy that TF2 ran more servers than Team Fortress Classic, much less CS. One of the main reasons I quit playing was it was too much of a chore to find good servers!
