But first a milestone of my own! Total Play Time: 2222 hours.

Respawn on 2fort can take up to 30 seconds, with killcam. You ought to try it because the depth of play cannot be matched. Sometimes, late in a 3 hour match, I will note to myself something like "there are only 45 minutes left! That is barely enough time to do what we need to do!" And then, if it gets done, I feel very rewarded.

Time capsule liveblog log follows.

Ray: true or false: Microsoft's gaming keyboard is named "Reclusa"
Fussbett: TRUE
Ray: correct
Fussbett: Razor names their keyboards after spiders.
Fussbett: Of which the Recluse is one
Ray: ohh
Ray: a boomslang is a snake!
Ray: what a day of discovery this has been
Fussbett: The Razor Tarantula is really nice looking actually.
Fussbett: BUT REGARDLESS the Reclusa is hilarious.
Fussbett: That brainstorming meeting was adjourned early.

If I have to bust out the calculator to figure out how good of a deal I'm getting, I almost always say no.
Steam: good platform, but you guys use the craziest damn pricing bundles.

Ray: is he talking about passing on the orange box?!
Fussbett: (In case you think there is some geometry involved, it's regarding the "Orange Box" from Valve costing $45)
Ray: ok that's what I was afraid of and he must be insane!
Fussbett: Did you play HL2 or ep1?
Ray: no
Fussbett: fuck, that really is the deal of the century for you then.

Fussbett: Did you pre-order Orange Box?
Ray: I tried to recover my password today so that I could
Ray: but that was a big mess
Ray: so, no [got "Primeval Warrior" badge anyway --ed.]
Fussbett: YOUR LOSS, TF2 IS AMAZING
Ray: I'm not surprised
Fussbett: Just kidding, Valve decided to not release it until 11:00pm PST or something

Thanks to failing eyesight (thanks, Suicide Girls) and this newfangled obsession with making everything look gritty, online FPS games are harder for me than ever. Half the time I can't pick people out from the environment until it's too late. Even in Counter-Strike, which is clearer than most, I often get popped in the head by a distant Colt and then have to cycle the chase-cameras to work out who killed me and from where.
So it's important to start this review by jumping up and down waving excitedly about Team Fortress 2's brilliant graphics: not only is everything extremely clear and intuitive, with character classes that you can easily distinguish at distance, but when you get killed the game crash-zooms to and freeze-frames your killer, so you can immediately identify who, why, how and where. Other FPS developers: copy this immediately.

Fussbett: Who is this guy, you?
Ray: I would never acknowledge they were too hard

Valve employee Erik Johnson speaking in a Shacknews group chat room wrote:

The maddeningly unreleased Team Fortress 2 beta is almost here. Valve is having difficulties with the dedicated Linux server software, causing a delay.
Fussbett: Linux >:(
Ray: after all the things Linux has given us, no one could've guessed the next thing would be a 12 hour TF2 delay

Ray: TF2 "installing" now
Ray: it's been at that for 3 hr
Fussbett: TF2 is pretty big. I think gigs, based on how fast my free HD disappeared in the last day
Ray: it said 7GB installed
Fussbett: wow
Ray: with all the HL2 games turned off
Fussbett: wow!
Ray: so I show up in the Caltrops member list but on "My Groups" it says I belong to none. What is this about?
Fussbett: Here's the dirty secret: there is not much benefit to these groups, I think
Fussbett: your friends list is more important
Ray: it's empty
Fussbett: yeah, friend up Jhoh and me and shit.
Fussbett: The friend system is really nice now (ie: almost as good as the Xbox360)
Fussbett: Friend come online it'll show you and then you can click to join their game.
Fussbett: ...and then it says the server is full, usually.
Fussbett: But the thought is there.

Ray: so have you played tf2?
Ray: as of now
Fussbett: yeah last night
Fussbett: I'm a little sleepy now.
Ray: I hope this beats my previous steam experience, wherein the download time exceeded the total playtime :(
Fussbett: haha
Fussbett: What game was that, HL2?
Ray: yes + CSSource
Ray: I didn't play hl2 single player, only the DM
Fussbett: there's your mistake
Fussbett: Did you eventually start up Bioshock?
Ray: no :(
Fussbett: You might have to face the fact that you don't like video games.

Fussbett: On the subject of TF2 disk space on Qt3....

People still pay attention to hard drive space?
Ray: haha noob
Fussbett: my posted reply: Wait until you discover Bit Torrent. It will blow your mind.

Fussbett: I saw myself running around at one point.
Fussbett: It was a fucking spy!
Fussbett: But I had a good 3 seconds of confusion.
Ray: goddamn spies!
Ray: I had a scroll bar in the middle of my screen for a round
Fussbett: "Did I switch to third person camera?"
Fussbett: Whoa, can the spies turn into scrollbars?
Ray: shooting it did nothing
Ray: so my short review is that the respawn+transit : shooting shit ratio is way off
Ray: but I could see myself liking the game eventually
Fussbett: in your old age
Fussbett: Have you played a round of 2fort yet?
Ray: I did play 2fort yeah
Ray: I don't remember it
Fussbett: 2fort seems small to me, which is why I bring it up
Ray: I will seek it out next time

Ray: you know what is responsible for this slowness BTW? Quake II.
Ray: it was too fast and the weapons too powerful and "Quake like" became synonymous with "mindless" and now, 12 years on, still no one dares to make a fast FPS
Ray: also a (cartoonish?) hit indicator would be nice
Ray: Q3 plays a sound when you hit something
Fussbett: They can't all be Quake 3, Ray!

Ray: I did like that team Caltrops was able to run the server
Fussbett: Yeah, after some warm up rounds, we're all good at video games, it turns out. Other people are not? I guess?
Team Caltrops steam rating wrote:

9.2 - Still not 10

Fussbett: Those jokers
Fussbett: I'm at like 2
Ray: that is for the whole Caltrops group
Ray: I'm at 4.2
Fussbett: Oh, well good for us.
Fussbett: It's based on playing time, and we've got three shut-ins, so things are looking good.
Fussbett: Four if we count you.
Ray: I'm a daywalker
Fussbett: I just made ICJ our Player of the Week.
Fussbett: I feel he deserved it.
Ray: I saw that and approved

Ray: getting back to the slowness, their fear of making the players move fast spills over to all elements of gameplay, notably the sniper class with his tiny FOV and and long, jarring reload animation
qt3 wrote:

One complaint, though: do the maps seem ridiculously small to anyone else? Even by Quake 1 era standards, these maps are medium size at best. There's no room for large battles, just one chokepoint after another. Hell, most Counter-Strike maps have larger combat areas.

Fussbett: Some people are shooting TOO much in TF2
Ray: the map design leaves much to be desired!
Ray: I'm guessing it's because having more than 5 enemies on screen would bog the framerate
Ray: see also: non-adjustable FOV
Ray: forums say it is fixed at 75. This BORDERS on gay
Fussbett: I'm a fan of fixed FOV, so I can't agree.
Fussbett: contests of skill need rules.
Ray: "fixed at 75" is way way worse than "fixed"
Ray: 120 would be nice. 90-110 would give a tip of the hat to legacy 4:3 users, and still be pretty standard. 75 is inexplicable
Fussbett: I'm sure people are crying about the Xbox360 being to blame
Ray: yes :(
Ray: and this I don't understand, as it's clearly the jews who are at fault
Ray: OR, a nice compromise would be 75 in the middle 90% of screen, with another 40 degrees of view squeezed into the outer 10% of screen
Ray: to simulate "peripheral vision"
Fussbett: That sounds processor-intensive for little gain
Ray: those outer bands would have low resolution -- minimal rendering effort
Fussbett: Low(er) resolution, but still lots of calculations to get the image to be reduced... plus I'm imagining some post process, like a blur, to make it seamless with the center rather than startling
Fussbett: It's never done outside of sniper scopes, so there must be reasons.
Ray: no one has thought of it
Ray: I believe T&L cards can do this squeezing in hardware
Fussbett: While it's easy to believe you're the one brilliant FOV mind operating today, I must err on the side of caution.
