What the hell is up with all the enemies having sand for blood? I feel like I'm playing Prince of Persia. I actually liked the DMC puppets, because it felt like you were smashing the living fuck out of them as parts of them broke off and flew across the room. In DMC3 I'm hitting phantoms that dissapear into a swirl of robes and sand.

Agreed that sand gooshing out is a bit of a letdown. If you want blood, just get a little further and take on the enemies from the later stages.

looking into the library, 5 out of the 6 enemies you'll be encountering for the first few hours are all "sand based demons". They bleed sand when attacked, one of their attacks is blowing a giant cloud of sand at you. Sand based grim reapers?

I just played a little DMC1 before trading it for this one and I think you're looking at it with rose colored glasses. The puppets didn't lose any pieces until you killed them and their death animation was only slightly more interesting. Plus they were really boring to fight.

Question: Is it worth it to level up your guns? Or are they going to made useless by better guns down the road? So far the pistols seem extremely powerful (first boss defeated entirely with them)...

Cripes, how long did that take? Are you playing on easy? Also: pussy.

Says the guy who got slaughtered on the ice guardian, a boss that telegraphs all his moves in advanced like a Mike Tyson's Punchout fighter. This game really isn't that hard. It's got a slightly higher learning curve, but otherwise the difficulty is pretty much the same as the original DMC.

As far as the first boss, closing with him is death. Pistols hurt him fine from a distance, so pistols it was. Actually the hardest part about him, and that whole first area fight where you're adjusting to the difficulty curve, derived all its challenge from the crappy camera. I disagree that the camera is better than DMC1. In that, the camera was zoomed out just right, in DMC2 it was zoomed out too far. Here it's zoomed in too close. It also carries over DMC1's obsession with always showing Dante from the front, instead of being placed behind his back so you can see what's in front of it (yeah you somtimes rotate the camera, but it rotates way too slowly and you can only adjust it 90 degrees, if it lets you adjust it at all in that particular area). In the first level (and many others down the road) you'll have enemies 10 feet away that you can't see. Those red grim reaper guys should be cake, but they'll all be off camera when suddenly they do one of their dash and slash attacks that comes out of nowehere and hits you. The only time the camera bugged me in DMC1 was during the Phantom fights, here in DMC3 it pops up during goon fights and (so far) in every boss fight except the ice guardian, which is what helped make the ice guardian the easiest boss.

...and the shotgun totally useless (doesn't hold enemies back like pistols, get raped while reloading). Which style is the best to stick with? I was thinking getting a bunch of freaking jumpy trickster moves then going for the john woo gunslinging with swordmaster as a distant third.

Well there are no more than one of every weapon type, so level up the ones you want to use. As far as getting raped while reloadeing the shotgun (???) you do realize you can switch weapons on the fly, right?

I was just wondering if it was worth it over getting new moves and items. Any recommendations for devil arms moves? I remember most of them being pretty redundant in DMC1.

So the only point of the shotgun is to fire off one opening blast then switch? I just got the artemis and it seems to make the shotgun obsolete. The gunslinger ability "fireworks" is pretty useful though.

I think trickster is best the first time through because you're invincible for a split second during that short little dash. Useful for learning moves from new bosses.

Yeah I've been sticking with trickster so far. Gunslinger is showy but not as useful, I have no clue what the usefulness of swordmaster would be (do I really need one or two more melee combos?), and royal guard appears it would be useful, but also boring.
