My workplace, as sort of a perk-slash-incentive thing, is offering to go halfsies with us on any tablet that we buy for personal use during the month of June (trying to keep us in the know on new technologies etc). I currently use a smartphone but do not own a tablet, and have very little experience with them, so I'm thinking about taking them up on it.
The iPad 2 is an obvious contender: it has the most applications available of any tablet (especially music apps), and that situation is likely to become more pronounced in the upcoming months instead of less pronounced... I assume. However, ICJ's experience with his iPhone and my experiences with Apple products in general have really made me dread using one, and that's not really the point of this thing. We're supposed to get something we'll use, not something we'll swear at. Mrs. oK has an iPad 1 that she got recently and when I use it I just can't shake that Apple feeling of "it's our tablet, you are lucky to be using it" which makes me want to dropkick the thing.
So! I was looking at Android tablets. The Xoom is supposed to be good but anecdotally I've heard that it's a bit sluggish. What do you folks think about the new Galaxy Tab 10.1? All the reviews are stellar but - again anecdotally - some smart folks have been bitching about Samsung's rebadged UI for Android. Thoughts?
Also wondering:
-form factor: the iPad and Tab 10.1 seem a little big for just whipping out and playing with (heh). Have you found this to be true?
-actual usage: the fact of the matter is that I wake up in the morning, I check my email on my phone, and then I drive to work, where I sit in front of a computer all day. Then I drive home, where I sit with a laptop on my lap or in front of my home desktop's screen until I go to bed. When the fuck am I even gonna use this thing? Tablet owners: do tablets actually serve a function in your lives?
