I didn't have a computer that could run Doom until '96, so I had to make due with the (surprisingly decent) SNES port and various ancillary media. The books were actually (incredibly bad) libertarian satire of the sort that exploded in popularity around the time Generation X had to start paying taxes. I guess the closest analogue would be something like South Park, which mocked both government and religion in a "politically incorrect" fashion. Fortunately for all, society quickly lost patience with that sort of thing once the high-tech bubble popped and all the information age rebels had to go on unemployment / start praying again. |
