Believe it, Far Cry 2 was great until about the halfway mark when I too succumbed to the boredom of the traveling chores. I didn't mind the respawning enemies at checkpoints because fortunately for me, I'm a psychopath and was delighted to kill them again. "You don't look too bad, here's another." BLAM, Bernie Goetz style. Reading the reviews now, I see that I (and I guess Arbit too) played the game with a different attitude than other people, although maybe we played it the same as the UbiSoft QA team. That's where you don't give a shit about checkpoints and just blow past them. Sure, they'll send a car after you which you can turn around and shoot, miles down the road, who cares. I can't even imagine how much easier it would be on NORMAL difficulty which is below where I play, psh. My only complaint is that there was no button to call the bad guys derogatory words for negro in Polish despite having picked the Polish old man as my character.
You laugh, but that feature would've presented some real gameplay choices.
Is this guy a murzyn or just a really tanned Italian?
Far Cry 2 (and Just Cause 2 as well) take me back to the glory days of GTA III when things happened accidentally or because of you, rather than to the script. Mercenary cars have barreled towards me only to clip a rock and flip, killing everyone inside. Mercenaries have throw grenades that killed other mercs. Mercenaries have run over each other. A collision pushed a burned out jeep over an enemy right in front of me.
And here's some people getting sniped in the head and neck for old time's sake...
