It's vast, and maybe Ray is (cynically, as usual) right in that there isn't the user base sufficient to fill up all that space, but I think that a site like that lends itself to much more than video game reviewing and, while complex and foreign, it does open the door for users to individually define their own subsections of the Caltrops empire - as though everyone here were suddenly able to create forums, edit posts, and make rules which they must enforce themselves. Like everyone were suddenly an admin, except without the IP logs.

The IP logs aren't going away. You know they exist underneath the webserver itself, right? You know that an ISP can be subpoenaed to provide them and fined if they don't have them, making it effectively illegal to shut them off?

I think a more feasible goal would be to have a charter, or a few up front rules about how things can and can not be used. I know you're no longer visiting #ga, but the old 'rule one' thing actually worked pretty well for years. I'm a fan of the US Constitution's delineation of powers, but I'd put them in more explicit, modern terms. However, you, me and everyone else realizes this sort of thing is just an elaborate way to say 'trust me'.

Rights and Responsibilities of the Host and Visitors of a Community Website

Host
Right - Their equipment, their code, their rules. The page exists at their sufferance, so how democratic things are is up to them.
Responsibility - The rules need to be made up front, posted and clearly understandable. The rules must include the standards to which the Host will hold him/her/them/sel/f/ves. Capricious change or misapplication of rules is not acceptable behavior. Sharing personal information about users is criminal behavior.

Visitors
Right - post as they will, use the functionality presented to them in whatever way suits them, express their opinions, remain (IRL) unidentified if they choose.
Responsibility - know and follow the rules presented by the host, to respect that others have the same rights, to make a reasonable attempt to keep a thick skin, as this is still the internet.

Basic Rules of Use -

1. No hacking the site
2. No personal information that was not already public
3. No warez files per hosting company
4. No porn files per hosting company
5. No spam. None. Zero.

Basic Standards of Service -

1. No changing meds mid-upgrade
2. No using IP logs as weapons without above rule-breaking
3. No spyware or other code stupidity
4. No spamming users

Structured Userbase -

The limitations of technology and the requirements of the users meet in security permissions and logging of changes. Service will include the following three usertypes:

Admin, who can and will maintain and edit the entire site. Responsible for continuous operation.
User, who can contribute and alter content. Responsible for keeping a valid email contact on file with the host.
Anon, who can alter or comment on content (and create?). Responsible simply for not breaking the rules.

I'd prefer to keep the User and Anon seperate, not because I don't want you to be able to post anonymously, but so I can have an email address to say 'did you post this paedo shit? because it's your ass that's going to jail for it if you did.' A completely anonymous poster would not get the benefit of the doubt, you flip their IP address to the fbi and do what you have to. A User would at least get the benefit of an email before they were thrown to the wolves, where the anonymous fuck who posted russian child porn on one of my existing wikis got fwd'd to our friends at the govt pretty quickly. The idea here is that if I know you (in the loosest sense) you get a little leeway before any kind of smackdown.

This is what you were missing with caltrops under the Ryvar Administration, that you didn't know you had with OMM. Now I don't really think SB went into it thinking he'd share people's personal shit, that he'd be all totalitarian with certain subjects, that he'd do such weird stuff, but almost all of our actions have unintended and unwanted consequences, and he's not in charge of his own mind 100% of the time. Chet wasn't using the IP logs to track who was saying what about whom and then letting it leak out via AIM logs. In journalism that's the lost concept of 'integrity', but on the internet it's seen as sko holy grail to be pursued...right after we surf for some more porn.

I guess my reservations about this sort of thing are still that the wikis I've used to this point not only keep logs of who did what, but they publish that as part of the site's page source. I'd rather the public logs be 'whoever you put in the author field' and then the change. I might be able to do it with this other software I've been playing with, but that would take a little work. The other reservation is that if I were an admin of a poe-type site, I'd be a lot like Chet, which I see as a good thing, though I suspect YMMV.
