By which I mean ever. I don't like football and I don't give a shit about the mess that is yet another iteration of Games Workshop's collectible money printing machine. Blood Bowl as made by Cyanide (the Legendary edition, ignore the other one) is chess hybridized with Poker, and unlike the board game the only fiddliness you have to deal with is an amateurish UI that stinks of indie. You prioritize your actions according to the kind of team you are, the team you are playing, and what are the riskiest actions you need to take relative to their importance. Permadeath and crippled favorite players are a frequent and unchanging feature in the multiplayer landscape, and there's nothing like a last turn cheap shot for experience that kills one of your most expensive players on a fluke to remind you of where you stand relative to the odds.
How do I become a part of this exciting phenomenon, you are asking right now? Well, first you get the game for $10 on the current impulse sale, or if you don't want to support more writing by Brad Wardell or securom's bullshit is too much for ou, wait until the next steam sale (I got it for 40$ but it's been at least half off...again, beware the Dark Elf edition you only want legendary). Then open the included manual (ripped straight from the boardgame) and ignore it completely as you realize you lack the attention span for it, and instead go to bbtactics for everything you need to know about starting rosters, player development ideas, skills, and plays.
Then you just play multiplayer against me or some other chump who at least has a basic grasp of the rules and in one game you'll have everything you need to crack into the active online scene or play against the modest AI as if it's some kind of obliging puzzle game that lets you get a feel for what each team looks like in the hands of an idiot. The first time you smear an elf into the turf or accidentally fling a goblin to his death you'll know why this ruthless, unpolished game is something special.
Everyone plays classic, by the way. The Blitz mode is an unfortunate experiment. |
