I heard that one of them, X2 I think, was incredibly buggy. And that stopped me from trying any of the others, which is sad, but it seems like there is another glorious failure in the field of Elite clone every month, so it's hard to get wrapped up in any particular game.
I haven't encountered any bugs so far, apart from the scripting issue of the initial tutorial as you start failing to take into account the Humble Merchant starting class not having any weapons on either of his ships.
How do you like it?
I don't know! I played for several hours, so I guess I like it enough. I've played through a few terran storyline missions and I they just gave me 4 m5s (m5 is the smallest ship - fast recon class) that I have set up as a wing that I give orders to, which seems pretty cool. One of the missions had me tail a pirate ship while avoiding combat. I kept not avoiding stuff, so I kept getting my ass handed to me. Once I had gotten it through my skull that I cannot take on a patrol of 3 m4s and 1 m3 with my single m4, I made progress. The ship had jumped though a gate to an unknown area full of pirates, so I kept within sensor range and out of patrol aggro range until it finally docked at the pirate base. Once that happened, I got orders to scan the fucking thing right as more pirate ships started to stream out of the base and come after me. My ship was a bit faster than theirs, so I lead them on until I could circle back around and get within scanning range of the base (500 meters - basically right on top of it). I thought I could strafe it and get the fuck out of the sector, but, no, that would be too easy. The scan was proceeding slowly, so I did a Han Solo and parked right on top of the thing so the pirate wing that was on my ass could not get an easy shot on me. I continued like a squirrel round a tree trunk until the scan was complete, then dodged some laser fire as they converged on me and got the fuck out.
The little combat that I've engaged in has been fast and hard. Missiles are exorbitantly expensive at the start, so I've been dogfighting as a rule. Just a few hits will completely obliterate an m5, and my m4's shields can't wither all that much fire either. The ai seems pretty good in that you can tangle pretty effectively with one guy when you get on top of him, but his teammates coming to bail him out can end you very quick. Haven't really tried any trading yet.
