After a month with it, I've come to conclusion that, although pretty and sporting a strong license, this game is ultimately pretty shallow and broken. You'll pretty much only use one or two different units the entire time, the heroes for the forces of good are massively overpowered, Mordor's army sucks med school cock, mass Rohan elves are unstoppable, and upgrades are ridiculous.
Remember the upgrades from Age of Empires and Starcraft? The took time to gradually research, cost a fair amount, and gave you bonuses that were small but still gave you an edge in battle. Here upgrades are ridiculously expensive, but make your units about FIVE times stronger. Unless you count hero rushing, most games are won by who simply gets upgrades first. They're not gradual, an enemy unit will suddenly flash and their swords will be glowing which causes them to dish out TRIPLE damage shortly before DOUBLING their armor and your non-upgraded units have no chance no matter how much you outnumber him by. Getting upgrades as little as 30 seconds sooner than your opponent can seal the win for you.
Also broken are the special powers you saw in the trailers. They work like the generals powers in C&C, you gain them as you kill enemy units and buildigs. Only in generals they were boosts, here they are god. The army of the dead is a complete game winner. Get that before your opponent and the game is automatically won. Also a game winner is that shockwave power Gandalf used in the video. It literally wipes out your enemy's entire army (it takes up the entire screen) and recharges in a ridiculously short amount of time (much faster than you can build a new army).
It's fun to screw around with for a little bit, because the graphics are gorgeous and who the hell wouldn't want to control the armies of middle earth? You like any sort of depth or variet in your RTS's though, you'll quickly move on. Did you hear there's a new patch for C&C: Generals?
