I had to take a break from dunting on my toy guitar for a few days because my fingers were sore and now it looks like I'm developing small calluses. From smooth plastic buttons. Ridiculous! On the plus side, I can now 5-star every Ramones song ever written (on medium).
The way training is set up is kind of weird and confusing. There's like 2 modes. When you first start the game it asks you if you want to go into training through Career mode. In that training, for each difficulty level, there's some tutorial videos to teach you how to understand the scrolling notation, then there's a couple training exercises, and then you attempt a song on whatever difficulty the training is at. The other training is through the "TRAINING" option off of the main menu, and then you pick what instrument you want to learn. When you pick an instrument you just get a big list of training exercises, divided by difficulty level, sans videos and song trials. Plus, I think there's a few more training exercises in the training list than through Career mode. It's kind of confusing why they didn't just have one training mode.
However, the way the training and difficulty ramps up is really great and feels like a very natural progression. It starts with just walking you across the strings, then using 1 or 2 different frets on one or two strings, then multiple strings, then having you move your hand up and down the neck as you play, then octaves, then power chords, and then actual chords which is hard as fuck and where I'm stuck now. Even when slowing the training down to the slowest speed, my hand almost instinctively curls into a middle finger if I even THINK it can change positions in succession into each chord I'm supposed to play.
I really recommend spending a lot of time in the training before bothering with the songs if you've never played guitar. Even working up into some of the medium training. In the Career mode training, I didn't think the one or 2 exercises they have you complete before attempting the first song were enough. You definitely need to work up to where you're moving your hand around on the neck. Also, if you've read the bit about people working up to medium level power chords in about an hour, it doesn't mean much. Power chord training is easy and stupid and should have been bumped down to Easy.
And I really can't stress enough how much I wish I could hear the actual note I'm playing, especially when playing chords. Remember when I mentioned that it looked like other strings were registering as vibrating when I just plucked one? I think that's affecting the accuracy of my chord playing by registering I hit all of the strings when I might be short. It's nice that the game is cheating in my favor now, but I'm going to have to send a pretty sternly worded e-mail to MadCatz customer support when I'm burning in Hell for eternity because of a minor flaw in their design. |
