I hope I'm wrong on all that but I bet I'm not. I wish that the United States's national pride was not riding on what is almost assuredly a piece of crap.

As far as Motor Trend is concerned, Rush Limbaugh is clearly a drug addled idiot, but the whole thing does smell fishy. The objection that "it couldn't be the COTY because it's too new" misunderstands what COTY is about, but an examination of past COTYs shows a glaring Big Three bias. Look at the Big Three cars that have made COTY in the past decade: the PT Cruiser, the Ford Thunderbird, the Chrysler 300, the Cadillac CTS, and the Ford Fusion. Out of those, only the Fusion isn't on Consumer Reports's "avoid this shitty car" list. (The Fusion is on it, but it was redesigned the year that it got COTY.)

COTY is never about longterm performance, reliability and repair cost, though. How would you predict that, other than just playing the odds and picking Toyota every year? It's hard to see how the PT Cruiser ever made it when it's so terrible to drive (defenders point to its cheapness and how it predicted the retro look that would overtake the market and still remain today), but great points can be found about all the other cars at the time of their launches.

Motor Trend always stresses that the cars aren't competing against each other, they're competing in their class, which certainly gives the Volt a very unfair advantage in that it's a crazy new entry unlike anything else. Pretty much what you want from COTY, I say. (And proving that GM still knows how to be shit, the gasoline powered Buick Regal managed to be slower than the Volt.)
