Find something like this, or the many cheapies that are sold on ebay. Or, hell, even spend the money to get the name brand Cisco-Linksys 200mbps powerline (you can add any brand extensions later on, I have two different kinds and it works fine), because there is no comparison between the performance I'm getting with this and what I used to get on wireless G or N. I can't tell you how much of my sanity has been salvaged by having such an important step in networking dealt with through a brain-free plug and play process that works flawlessly.
Nevertheless, the original advice to get a cheap wireless G router was good, since the one you got (hopefully) is probably upgradeable to DDWRT which makes most performance considerations moot. I don't know shit about the technical side, mind you, but I've spent a considerable amount of time and money unfucking this situation for myself, and DDWRT router + powerline is the best thing I've done in years.
I ended up purchasing the router that Ray suggested as soon as I saw it. I'm going to ask a very stupid question, LK. The link you provided ... it looks like it offers ethernet as something you plug into your wall. That can't be it, though. I can buy cat5 cable going from a PC to this thing and into the wall... but how does any of it get to a router or cable modem? That seems pretty science-fictiony. I want to believe, of course.
But I probably misunderstand it.
