I read a great article recently about the scoring mechanic in GT4. Autistic, certainly, but still something the designers of the technically-fantastic-yet-utterly-soulless Forza Motorsport could learn from.

I was waiting for the price to come down on the enhanced 360 port of Revenge, but I guess I waited too long because - despite being an EA-published racing game from 2006 that apparently sold well enough to get a Platinum Hits re-release - you still can't find even a used copy on eBay for less than $40 shipped. I wouldn't pay $40 for a used game if it came with its own hydraulic cockpit! People are treating it like some kind of super-rare title and damned if I can figure out why. Quality, maybe?

I honestly have no idea how Ridge Racer V made the list. SSX was more historically important as a launch game, while Midnight Club holds up better today. At least this spot didn't go to (fucking) Tekken!

Never played it, but as I said I loved the sequel (which I gather was more of the same?). Loved the goofy humour, loved the cartoonish low-poly art style, loved how the campaign was structured around replayable challenges instead of narrative slog, loved the frantic movement and smooth framerate, and most of all I loved how at every juncture, it was obvious that concerns like realism and cinematicity took a backseat to FUN. If those have all become uniquely console traits then I guess it's a good thing I don't give a shit about modern PC shooters.

The Burnout devs are working on a sequel, confusingly titled Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (implied 3). It's probably my most-anticipated game at this point. |
