The Soldier stat is unsurprising, and a damning indictment of the ammo system by Fortinbras 09/11/2010, 8:32pm PDT
The reasoning behind the ammo system was because everyone favored using a certain gun and didn't swap out their weapons that much. This was never true in my experience of Mass Effect. As an Infiltrator, one of my powers from maxing out my pistol skill was that I could use it rapid-fire without overheating, so I'd use my pistol for short range and use my rifle at a distance.
Unfortunately, they conveniently forgot that a lot of the classes are built around specialized weapons. Infiltrators get sniper rifles, Sentinels get shotguns, etc. So what happens when you make ammo scarce and render my sniper rifle useless after 13 shots? You pick the class that gets a bonus in all weapons, maxing your potential ammunition count. As an Infiltrator I get 3 weapons. Pistol, SMG, and Sniper Rifle. A Soldier gets five. And he even gets the Infiltrator's special power, which is that whenever I look down a scope time slows down. Well fuck you Infiltrator, the Soldier gets an ability called Adrenaline Rush that makes time slow down whatever weapon he's using. On top of that, the Soldier gets three different ammo powers, Cryo/Disruptor/Incendiary, AND Concussive Shot for knocking out biotic barriers. You know the funny thing about ammo powers? They have an insanely high return on a single point's investment, since the damage boost and other effects stack with every round you fire. Compare that to the Biotic/Tech classes which have to sit and wait 5-10 seconds for their powers to recharge. Why the fuck would anyone play anything else?
If I wasn't posting on Caltrops, I'd say they learned a valuable fucking lesson from this, but as it stands I fully expect Mass Effect 3 to be totally unplayable as any other class.
Oh, wait, they actually did learn a valuable lesson:
