I've never played any of the new pop games, so I don't have a frame of reference to compare this to the others. I really enjoyed this game anyway, it's very well made, and the acrobatic exploration is much more enjoyable than say perhaps uncharted 2. I liked the combat also so they must have made sure to do a good job on that. for the most part it's just a really nice enjoyable game that took me about 8 hours to beat and had plenty of other secrets I could have combed through, so that is good too.
and then it gets to the end game and suddenly you're playing like an ultra realistic version of bayonetta, where you're riding floating platforms inside a sandstorm tornado, as the sun whips around you at an insane speed. the end game goes from "pretty cool" to "holy shit really cool" for the last half hour.
as for the spells, the only spell I didn't get to upgrade was the ice blast spell because it didn't sound like it did any aoe, but I was able to fully upgrade the aoe windblast and fire trail spells. at the highest level the wind blast will catch enemies in a cyclone and instakill a whole army, which is extremely helpful. the fire trail on the other hand seemed very weak even at max level. the other spell I got, some kind of rock shield, reduced damage by like 90%, making combat extremely easy which helped a lot on the last boss.
it's always a sign of good game design when you can fight really insane odds but succeed due to your multiple options. you get a lot of different moves in combat and the spells are all designed to give that extra little push without seeming too valuable to waste magic on like god of war. I got several crazy achievements like flip kicking enemies off cliffs and killing 50 sand monsters without taking damage, and that's without really even trying for them because the combat system is pretty good (better than sands of time? I dunno) |
