once I saw prince on TV performing for some isn't-prince-great special (those are his favourite). I think it was during the time he was a symbol? not sure.
anyway, so he's doing purple rain and everyone is swinging their hands and totally feeding him back all the love in the world and he's just soaking in it and he is working his solo up to the final climactic "oohs" and he calls out to the audience
sing it with me now
and he knew. he knew. that 90% of those people couldn't hit those notes, even if they were decent at carrying a tune in their own register. and it was a squeaky discordant mess, I tell you what, and he let them hang themselves for a while, an elemental distillation of smug, regarding them -- his faithful -- with disdainful amusement.
then into the mic he sang over the cacophony, perfectly.
