So I'm watching Millennium again for the first time since it aired. I remember it getting pretty boring, but I would've been 12-14 at the time so I figure a lot of stuff must have gone over my head. Also, I think we're juuust far enough removed from 1996 that I can appreciate it on a nostalgic level, what with all the SUVs, dial-up modems, and phones with cords on them on display, not to mention the rocking White Zombie/Nine Inch Nails soundtrack that was ubiquitous at the time but now sounds nice and quaint. In fact, I think Millennium was the first show to have an episode about a serial killer who kills people live on webcam, so I guess I have that to look forward to? I've only seen the first two episodes so far, but here's what I thought.
PROS
- When your show stars Lance Henriksen and Terry O'Quinn, you can pretty much just cut to the chase and call it "Two Cool Dudes".
- Filmed on location in the extra-scary Greater Vancouver Regional District and Spookhouse Creepatorium, back when that wasn't entirely a badge of shame.
CONS
- So far we've spent entirely too much time with Frank's perfect family. I know we're supposed to be building an air of menace and creeping dread but I. DON'T. GIVE. A. SHIT.
- Both of the first two episodes have featured huge ungainly expository conversations where someone explains the entire plot of the show (burnt-out criminal profiler moves back to "quiet" home town to protect his family and his sanity, finds himself unable to run from his gift/curse to understand the criminal mind and possibly be psychic, maybe, it's never really spelled out). That's okay when we're just starting out, but if they're going to do the same thing every week they should've just written it into the theme song. When you realize stylin' rhymes with criminal profilin' it practically writes itself. |
