Fighting the skeletons at the Emery Hills battleground will be a breeze if you have a cleric. Take on the moat house at level 2. The game goes from needing area of effect spells really bad in the beginning/middle to really needing (and never having) individual high damage spells.

Yeah. Fart around in Hommlet as much as possible. There's plenty of lowball stuff there. Then, screw around in Nulb before trying the Temple.
