I am only a few hours in and have been avoiding most of the story progression.
The story has the same characteristics you described below. I think the ending is worthwhile, but I understand that wasn't a problem with GTA4 either.
A car (horse) can be summoned at any time, but sometimes spawns in inaccesible locations (on top of cliffs) and wanders around rather than comes to you.
You have to buy the ability to fast-travel to locations. Which means grinding.
Both of these are improvements.
The horse can be erratic, like when it wanders away from you in the midst of loading a hogtied bounty to it. Right before all his pals show up to fuck you up. But the horse deeds serving as a save anywhere option more than made up for that.
Many the GTisms you'd expect are present. Break the plane of a suspect area and a continuous stream of US Marshal deputies spawn and come riding right for you, shooting all the way.
However! The cops are the least intrusive I've seen in an open world game in a while, esp. Rockstar. Their numbers are regulated by the size of the town you are in, and if you do fucked up shit and kill the witnesses, you're golden. And once you have a bit of credibility as measured in honor, you can get away with all kinds of things without doing much more than getting people to aim in on you. For instance, you can hogtie a preacher, load him up, and ride away to throw him in front of a train away from witnesses. But you can't drag him to death in front of people or they'll call the law and probably try to take it into their own hands, depending on the individuals.
I've only had it screw me over once, which was when I accidentally shot a non outlaw passerby on my way to deliver a (live) bounty), right on the fringe of town. As I rode up to the sheriff, the bounty registered on my screen, I got as far as "Oh, shi..." and got smoked by the sheriff and deputies.
Which brings me to the bounties. I thought they were lazily designed. A few good location fights, but the run home was sloppy and boring, especially 20 times (needed for the 100%). I seem to recall the hitman missions in GTA being much better, and that's more of what I expected. I was also disappointed that the newspaper didn't serve as a passive trigger for missions, without a need for big dots on the map.
But the bears, cougars, and even the lowly packs of wolves and coyotes are great. I wish there was more of a sense of non-scripted others being targets besides you, which seemed to only happened when it was disadvantageous to me (Hey, I saved your wife but watch out for that...oh. Too bad). And animal interfighting beyond my horse getting mauled periodically would have been nice. |
