1. Demon's Souls-Best game made last year. Avoid at all costs.
2. Disgaea 3
3. Yakuza 3- Dysfunctional JRPG version of GTA4, with some kind of previous gen 3d fighting engine as the main conflict resolution mechanism. Sounds terrible, but hey, sometimes you just have to realize that it's ok to enjoy a game where you unlock new moves not only through traditional routes but through in-game spontaneous photoblogging of Japanese people disgracing themselves in public.
Games that are PS3 exclusives and are really popular with some crowds, just not me
1. Valkyria Chronicles- Animoo reenactment of WWII, with quasi-tactical RPG gameplay all done with a zoom in to individual/zoom out to battlefield perspective that could have been a redeeming feature to anyone who hadn't played Fire Emblem or any game that actually had real tactical decisions. Combat is ultimately broken, but not if you are just enjoying the experience as some do.
2. God Of War 3- Easy to play, high production values, probably pretty appealing if you missed the last few and/or don't play too many games in the action button mashing genre.
3. InFamous- Came out at the same time as Prototype. More of an Assassin's Creed style movement thingy, and not bad overall if you can completely ignore the "morality" system which makes Bioware look deep in comparison.
4. MGS4- I actually like this one, but can't recommend it to anyone. I lend it with a grimace upon request, but it is a catastrophe overall.
Somewhat recent non-exclusives that are generally viewed positively
1. Resident Evil 5- Just came out with a bonus whatever version for PS3. It's great in splitscreen and online, and would have been the best game of last year but for Demon's Souls.
2. Assassin's Creed 2- Very possible to hate the first and like the second. Very possible to hate both. I guess it depends on if the movement and the easy gratification of the combat was almost enough to carry the first for you, as the second is superior in almost every way. Well, except for the combat. And the plot is still stupid. But STILL parkour facestabs.
3. Dead Space- Event Horizon the survival horror game. Good shit, overall.
Dragon Age is nothing like Mass Effect, except in terms of the least important component (the setting/hackneyed Bioware story). They are both awkwardly cliched versions of their respective genres, except one is much more of an action game and the other one is what Baldur's Gate might look like when run through a World of Warcraft filter. If either of those ideas repels you, it won't work. It sure as hell didn't for me, being lukewarm on the former and disgusted by the latter. If that still works for you and you are ok with significantly lower production values than ME for a game that is spread much thinner, then make it happen. |
