Did you feel that ME1 had meaningful choices in either of those departments? The guns were the most extreme example, but I got the impression that short of insane difficulty there was not a lot of finetuning required. You max out your chosen leadership path whenever possible, and max out your power of choice and whatever gun you had access to first since there was no efficient way of changing midstream, and then fill up the remainder powers. Specialize team members in a complementary manner. I guess I didn't notice the "missing" abilities or skills once I was done with the initial surprise of the cooldown system and fucking stupid universal-yet-not ammo.
It's more for the opening and midgame than for the endgame. Dumping points into your weapon as opposed to survivability, for instance. One of my ME1 playthroughs focused on sniping anything and everything with virtually no close combat abilities. Oh, and deciding whether you wanted to focus on your Charm/Intimidate as opposed to clumsily blundering through conversations. Even if everyone is going to take the same route, I appreciate the illusion of choice.

I think here is where I begin to understand the difference. I couldn't stop myself from every available sidequest and I'm pretty sure I scanned every planet. This was before I realized you could hack saved games for resources, naturally. I guess I fail to consider the non-completists view of scarcity sometimes.
For my 360 playthrough, I grinded through 30+ planets at the very beginning to accumulate resources so that I wouldn't have to stop mid-galactic rampage to go resource fishing. I finished every sidequest as well, and even got 16 of the 20 crates on the abandoned cargo mission. The fact remains that there's only so much cash in the game, and the requirement to spend credits on probes/fuel is a constant drain with no path to replenishment. I'm interested to see if the DLC is going to rectify this.
I think this is a direct reaction to how you could be a multimillionaire in ME1 by midgame. I'd rather the devs err on the side of too much money though instead of not enough; having to carefully budget my equipment costs isn't fun early in the game and it's downright annoying in the late game.

I liked that I could still kill _____ by explicitly assigning him to a mission for which he was described as unsuited. And then murder my entire crew all over again by giving them a good luck pat on the ass and not much more for their escape plan. See ya, Doc!
My first playthough I had everyone loyal, all upgrades, and sent Legion through the pipe. I decided not to escort the crew back, and for some reason Grunt was swept away by the seeker swarms at the end of that segment. It would have been cool to have the option to play through a difficult-bordering-on-unfair rescue mission to retrieve any crew members that you lose. You can still be a callous uncaring bastard and leave them to die in service of the mission, or you can risk it all to not leave anyone behind. Options, man. I'm a fan of options. |
