finally watched this last night HGB

it was fascinating of course, and enlightening, and fucking freaky (the chemistry segment in particular), but I felt there was a huge chunk missing: comparing to braiding, twisting, and dreadlocks. braids are often elaborate and patterned, yes? I wondered how that rated next to "good" hair because it seems like it must be at least "accepted" if similar time and effort goes into it. they whooshed over some photographs of beautifully braided heads and that was it.

If anything, braids carry more of a stigma than dreads or twists, in that they're pop-culture shorthand for "uneducated black welfare queen." Fuck what Glamour magazine says, I'll take my chances with "political" any day.

Moreover, braids usually involve weaves as well. If you can grow your hair long enough to really braid it up right without outside assistance, chances are you're going to perm it and shove it in the face of all your so-called friends. You know, like driving by the bus stop on the way back from picking up your new car.

As for the really intricate, patterned, tiny braids: that's a lot of effort and a lot of time for something that is going to look like utter shit within ten days. They look nice in magazines and shit, and I've seen them done for special events and one-time occasions, but I've never known anyone who kept something that labor-intensive as an everyday style. And I've known girls who slept sitting up every night.
