I was planning to avoid the movie as I didn't want to hear about the sociological roots of why black women hate their hair, etc.
Taking your Jesus hair for granted.

Also as L_K mentioned, the movie ran out of material and decided to end as an exposé of judging inconsistencies at a hairdressing competition, which was a poor choice.
Yeah, I agree that Chris Rock really dropped the ball with the Bonner Bros. portion of the movie. I think it would have been more interesting to focus on the one white competitor and play up the David/Goliath battle, especially when the other two ladies clearly weren't on their level when it came to presentation. I wanted more like the Botox scene, less of him walking around in pajama pants, looking bored and disinterested because even if he loses, shit, he's still white. He's still going to be playing with the house's money either way.

One aspect that really bothered me was Chris Rock positioning himself as the ignorant outsider to all this. He's just a simple white documentary filmmaker with a black nappy head daughter, trying to get some answers. He's not a multi-millionaire black man, married to a woman with straight Indian hair at all. And this is of course so he can do his Chris Rock comedy shock face all the time. "A THOUSAND DOLLARS?!" Yeah, a thousand dollars, Chris. It's the thousand dollars that shows up on your credit card bill every month.
I wrote a long thing here, but it started to delve into those sociological roots that you're uninterested in, so I'll just leave it at that you're right, but the feigned shock was to underline to the audience that they weren't discussing Supercuts money.

Black appropriation of white culture alert: Misfits logo (in gold glitter) on the back of a silky gown of the crossdressing hairdresser entourage, and one of the hot chicks wearing a "Famous" t-shirt that is a parody of the Master of Puppets album cover.
I knew you'd appreciate the counter-appropriation of the Misfits logo, but I missed the Famous t-shirt!
One of my favorite parts: the scientist's reaction when Chris Rock told him that that people used sodium hydroxide to straighten their hair: "Oh, I wouldn't do that." |
