It was more a collection of missed opportunities than anything. It could have been a tense stranger in a strange land missing persons thriller, or it could have been an all out splatter fest, but it compromises on both and ends up being neither. The pre-gore parts are boring, and when it finally does get to the gore it ends up not even being on par with an Evil Dead movie in terms of blood or humor. The goriest part is cutting off a dangling eyeball and having pus squirt out, which loses its impact when you assume that the reason he picked up the knife is so he could cut away the polystyrene burn mask someone had glued to her face.
It does have a surprise ending in the sense that it just ends suddenly.
Extra bonus points for trying to get the important message across that business majors and frat bros (business majors to be) are horrible people, with European businessmen being the worst of all.
