...or a ram bus failure, or windows sucking.
1. Can be a software problem, usually a pileup of crap that runs at startup, like spyware and such. Under Win98 sometimes it would corrupt a file it needed and then not tell you for a while until it stopped working. Moving from 98 to 2k or XP with the ntfs filesystem seemed to fix it at my shop.
2. Can be a hardware problem. You didn't specify what kind of computer you have, but let's pretend you have an athlon, because it's easier to diagnose and fix:
- run a defrag, if you haven't in a year or so the fragmentation can lead to problems if your computer is swapping heavily.
- Don't overclock it. You can get water-cooled cases now, but if you don't have one, leave your chip at it's expected speed.
- Athlons run very hot. p4-2.5ghz+ also run pretty hot, and have shitty retail fans. 64bit procs are made out of lava or something. Athlons can run up around 150 degrees, but they don't like it much, so make sure there's nothing on top of or surrounding the computer case, and that the thing is ventilated. If possible, keep it in an air conditioned room.
- Dry and dust-free is good, too. Get a can of compressed air. Take the computer outside on a dry day. Spray the compressed air in there until the machine is completely clean. The second you see the huge billowing cloud of dead skin particles coming out of it, you'll be happy you took it outside.
- get a better chip cooler, they're cheap
- get better case fans, they're very cheap
- make sure your power supply isn't overworked
- make sure you have 1GB of very fast RAM made by crucial in your computer
- hard drives, RAM and expensive video cards generate a lot of heat. all of those can be cooled as well, though that puts more strain on your power supply.
Also consider:
- Don't smoke near the computer. Cigarettes are the only thing more poisonous than the chemicals in a computer, and that fucking tar smoke sticks to everything in there. This isn't a scree about your health, which I don't care about, it's about the computer running well.
- burn all your cat's hair off. It will appreciate the cool feeling afterwards and it'll stop gumming up your case fans with hairballs.

...oh yeah: you and I should start our own BBS for this. That's the only smart political page I've read in a while, even though it's mostly not about politics.
In retrospect, you were 100% wrong. Installing XP fixed every problem I ever had, and I smoke at the computer constantly. |
