borderlands review part 2 the final onslaught no wait by Weyoun Voidbringer 11/02/2009, 9:41pm PST
the game seems fairly similar to most mmos as far as the ui and rpg elements go, but there are some very important differences. first off, no monthly fee. if you want to tool around on your character in a few months, you don't need to resubscribe and try to justify the money spent by playing the game every day.

second, the max allowed players per server is 4, so the game never forces you to find an entire party with the proper balance of tanks heals and damage dealers. you can get through the whole game alone or with one partner if you want.

the loot system is a massive improvement of course. most of your upgrades can be found just about anywhere, on the ground or in shops or from special chests or boss drops. you never have to struggle through 10 levels with outdated gear or buy weapons off the auction house just to end up finding a slightly better upgrade off a random monster drop or anything, one of my favorite item references is a shield unit called the "cracked sash" which anyone who played diablo 2 will remember.

granted I played with koba for like 8 hours in coop mode and never got an epic sniper rifle or revolver while he was rained in a fountain of epic assault rifles, until I played a little singleplayer later and found both a legendary revolver and sniper rifle FOR CHEAP from a vending machine. which brings to mind another pair of important factors: availability of low level gear and the difference between the gear quality (ie regular whites uncommon greens rare blues epic purpz). you always have a proper set of effective weapons, higher levels simply increase the variety of item effects you will find on your shotguns and rifles and class mods and whatever, as well as basically increasing the damage output. you might find an epic smg at lvl 6 from a boss drop and keep it for 5 more levels, but you don't feel obligated to hang onto it just because of it's rarity.

It really hurts for a lack of a nice big random dungeon. by Worm 11/03/2009, 4:48am PST NEW
I'd say you're mistaking "breadth" for "depth", except most RPGs don't have much NT by of that either. "Length", maybe? 11/03/2009, 3:55am PST NEW
