I'm thinking specifically about the sketch where Bill Hader's John Phillips had his own late night talk show, which he used as a platform to make glib, self-deprecating-but-not-really statements about the "creepy things" he'd done. I think the worst part was when they would cut away to his bandleader. I don't know how they talked host Ryan Reynolds into playing an aborted foetus in Paul Schaeffer shades but it really didn't pay off, and I wouldn't be surprised if ten years from now we look back on it as the point his career died. The whole thing felt more like a particularly crass Mad TV sketch than something you'd expect to see on NBC's flagship comedy show :( |
