Not so much about the movie itself, but about the audience.
It's a pretty polarizing movie. Either you believe the girl died and the scene with her standing in the Faerie court was a hallucination or you believe the magic was real and her faerie soul really was finally to escape her human body and go back home.
I fall into the latter category, myself and being one of the "happy" ending people I can tell you why I argue so hard for it. For one thing, it IS just a movie, one of those rare times when we humans can suspend our disbelief and believe the impossible is more likely to happen than the logical. For another, the character had such a shitty life, even though she's a fictional character, you want some happiness for her in the end. For another, It's a God-damned fairy tale. The phrase "fairy-tail ending" was specifically invented to describe an impossibly happy ending.
My question is why do the "sad" ending people argue so hard for their side of the argument? Is it just pure cynicism and meanness? Can you not stand the idea of someone squeezing a bit of happiness from such a grim and bleak story? Is it an ideology thing? Do you feel you're defending science from religion, here? Is it just arrogance? Can you just not stand the idea of someone, somewhere thinking you might be wrong about something? |
