It seemed like with the upgrade system, the game demo was just trying to distract me from recognizing how shallow it was by having a new +1 to armor button to click every 5 seconds. You build a blacksmith and there are like a dozen tiny upgrades to click on right off the bat! Also, the system of having to put flags down while monsters stomp thru the fuckin block ruining shit with their troll ruin lifestyle to get any heroes more than an inch away to do anything was pretty dumb. You'd think town defense would be something where you just hit a big 'come home and fight' button. But no! You have to either lay down a bunch of flags, then decide how much money you want to spend on each to get heroes to pay attention to defending the guy who pays them, or just wait for each AI to randomly start doing something instead of sitting around while shit gets ruined. Really, the game plays just like a basic early 2000s style RTS, except with units that move around your base randomly and unit AI that's both bad and also only manageable through that clunky objective flagging. Your only hope is to upgrade your heroes enough to overcome the AI - then you can laboriously take out the enemy spawn points, like Hinterland did but clumsier and without combat to keep your interest. |
