The Gen 3 ones in the Amazon link for three grand would be tolerably good for most uses when new out of the box. The ones we had were being phased out, because they were old and shitty and being replaced with Gen 4 monocular NVGs, which are far superior in every way (not least because they leave your shooting eye free for shooting, adjusted to the dark, peripheral vision etc). Some drivers bitched about the depth perception issue, but I'd much rather have the advantages of the other and just learn to deal with it. These all rely on optical light enhancement vs digital enhancement, and I believe that is still the technology of choice for military applications at the level of personnel. But you'd be a lot better off investing in a decent camera with digital night enhancement technology, especially if it's onw with the see through clothes gimmick, as the civilian stalker gear of choice.
All of the optical light enhancement I've seen that's in the sub 2000$ (retail) (as of 2 years ago) has been utter crap. They tried issuing all kinds of cheap shit to Iraqi soldiers, and it was depressing to the point where no one took them as anything but a joke. |
