I, like many other actual music lovers, sit around and listen to music. Just - listen to it. And to hold the entire of my attention requires something many magnitudes of order more interesting than jangly hooks. Last night I put on Ghost's "In Stormy Nights" and listened to the whole thing while lying on the floor of my office with all the lights off. There's a 28 minute long track of mostly inchoate noise in there! The noise tells many things but none of them are on the order of "let's have fun" and "I like a girl and she doesn't like me." So you would hate it, don't even bother.
Here's the problem: nobody who actually likes music will have any reaction to Coldplay more positive than "lukewarm" or "will tolerate it." Because it's shit music. You are in the majority of humans in your love of the easy tune, but you're not to be ranked with people who can listen to or judge or enjoy music.
You're smearing practically all the good music that came out in the 20th Century with one giant Coldplay brush when you say that simple music is bad, or that music with a romantic theme is bad(!). It's not even fair to Coldplay: Coldplay sucks because they're pretentious, not because their music is simple. They suck because they want to be U2, and who would do that? Buddy Holly's music is simple and about love! Sam Cooke's music is simple and about love! Simple music is good! (Romantic music can be bad or good, which is a good thing because the percentage of music that's about love is so high that it rounds to 100%.)
There's a book lying around here somewhere called The 50 Worst Records in Rock and Roll History or something like that. They make a lot of weird choices and obviously have some stupid axes to grind but their opening section ("The 33 1/3 Rules of Rock Music") said it best when it said "The quality of a rock song is inversely proportional to the number of instruments playing on the record." |
